Introduction:
Ball valves, while highly reliable and durable, can occasionally encounter problems.
It’s crucial to be aware of recurring issues that can affect these valves to promptly identify and solve the problem. In this article, we will explore some common problems associated with ball valves and offer some details for identification and problem solving, highlight Vinco’s approach to assisting in these scenarios and emphasize the importance of manufacturing quality and materials in preventing these events.
Key Challenges and Solutions:
1.Leaks:
Leaks are a common concern with ball valves and addressing a leak requires precise identification of the issue’s source, followed by appropriate corrective actions. Leaks can be external or internal. External leaks are visible on the outside of the valve and their identification and exact location helps determining the appropriate solution. Internal leaks occur inside the valve and are therefore more challenging to detect. Inspection and tests are required to identify the source of the leak.
Leaks can be triggered by many factors, such as wear, damage or malfunction. If the leak results from wear, valve replacement might be necessary. For leaks caused by damage, repair procedures are recommended by means of a spare parts maintenance or clean. In cases where malfunction is the cause, valve adjustment may be the solution.
2. Blockages:
Blockages are another common occurrence in ball valves. This situation arises when the valve fails to close completely, potentially causing some severe effects, including reduced flow rates, increased pressure drops and inefficient system operation. Solving a blockage requires identification of the underlying cause to implement subsequent corrective measures. If debris or dirt are responsible for the blockage, thorough valve cleaning is required. Actuator blockages can also occur due to loss of power, affecting the normal movement of the device.
In these cases, it may be necessary to check and repair or replacement must be carried out.
For blockages caused by damage, such as a damaged seat or ball, repair processes should be implemented or, in some cases, replacement of these components. Incorrect installation, such as misalignment of piping, valve orientation and/or welding process can lead to blockages as the valve may not function as intended. It is necessary to properly install the valve.
3. Corrosion:
Corrosion is a potential risk for ball valves operating in severe environments. Avoiding corrosion requires selection of resistant materials to the process. The material selection should be based on the specific corrosive properties of the fluid and the environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, pressure, concentration and others. Incompatibility between materials and fluids can accelerate corrosion. Keeping the valve clean and free from debris is also crucial to prevent corrosion.
4. Wear:
Wear is a natural phenomenon affecting all valves, including ball valves. Extending the lifespan of a ball valve requires regular maintenance. This maintenance includes valve lubrication, component inspection, and the replacement of worn-out parts when necessary. Lubricants not only extend the lifespan as enhance its operational efficiency. Regular inspections of the ball, stem and sealing components must be carried out. When inspections reveal worn-out or damaged components, it’s necessary to replace them as soon as possible.
Vinco’s Approach and Manufacturing Quality:
At Vinco, we recognize the significance of providing comprehensive support for ball valve issues.
For this purpose, we created supporting documents for each series such as Technical Datasheets with information relating to torque values, list of materials, working conditions, main dimensions, type of end connections, etc. IOM is a manual that aims to assist customers in the installation, operation and maintenance of the ball valves. Furthermore, we understand that manufacturing with quality and proper material selection are critical elements to prevent problems in service field. Investing in valves manufactured to high quality standards, with resilient materials, is essential to enhance the performance of the valve and prevent leaks, blockages, corrosion, and premature wear.
